Description

The Northern Catalpa is a species of Catalpa that is native to the midwestern United States. It is a medium sized tree growing to 15-30 m tall. It has large heart-shaped leaves that are 20-30 cm long and 15-20 cm wide. It produces flowers in late spring that are white with purple spots and yellow stripes inside, trumpet-shaped in clusters of 10-30 flowers. It is usually the last tree to grow leaves in the spring. It is known for its characteristic long cigar-shaped fruit that often stay attached to the tree throughout the winter. It is widely planted as an ornamental tree, preferring moist, high pH soils and full sun. Its wood is soft and light and has been used for fence posts in the past, and in modern times for furniture and interior trim. (Source: Wikipedia )
