Description

Black maple is also called rock maple or black sugar maple and is closely related to sugar (hard) maple. It is native to eastern North America and can be found in forests from southern Ontario and Quebec, south to North Carolina and west to northeastern Kansas and Missouri. Black maple prefers rich, moist soils near riverbottoms in hardwood forests. It can often be found growing in forest stands that contain sugar maple, beech, birch, oak and hickory. This species is very shade tolerant and seedlings prosper under heavy forest cover. Black maple is cut and sold with sugar maple as hard maple lumber. The trees can be tapped for sap for making maple syrup.
