Description
The Chinquapin Oak is also sometimes called yellow chestnut oak, rock oak, or yellow oak. This oak tree can be found ranging from southern Ontario throughout the mid-eastern to central United States. It is typically found on well-drained upland slopes, usually with other hardwoods. Associated forest cover includes white oak, black oak, red oak, hickories, black cherry, butternut, basswood, sugar maple, white ash, as well as sassafras, and flowering dogwood. Its acorns are sweet and favoured by squirrels, mice, voles, chipmunks, deer and turkey. Though it seldom grows in size or abundance to be commercially important, its heavy wood does make excellent fuel. It can be distinguished from other oaks by its oval, lobed leaves that look similar to American chestnut leaves. (Source: Silvics of North America)
