Description
The English Oak, as its name implies, is native to England and can also be found throughout Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. In North America it is often planted as an ornamental, favoured for its height and large spreading crown. It prefers moist, well-drained, moderately rich soils of variable pH, but adapts well to dry soils of poor quality. English oaks can be distinguished from other oaks by the long stalks to which its acorns are attached, as well as its rather large terminal buds. There is an upright, columnar form of this tree which can be found in nurseries called ‘Fastigiata’. Trees of this variation remain columnar throughout their lifespan, and an example of these trees can be found in Simcoe in front of the Town Hall and Public Library. (Source: Ohio DNR )
