Description
The Pignut Hickory is also known as smooth bark hickory, swamp hickory and broom hickory. It is a common, but not abundant species in the eastern United States and Canada. Preferring moist soils, but has been observed growing in dry sandy soils, pignut hickory can often be found growing alongside other hickories, oaks, white pine and poplar. The fruit is pear-shaped and ripens in September and October. The husks are green until maturity, then turning brownish black as they ripen. The nuts are favoured by wildlife including squirrels, turkey, deer and songbirds. Like other hickories, Pignut hickory has a high heating value and is often used for fuelwood. (Source: Wikipedia )
