Description
The Southern Catalpa is a medium-sized deciduous tree growing 15-18 m tall, and is native to the southern United States. Despite its southern origins, it has been able to grow almost anywhere in the United Sates and southernmost Canada. It is closely related to the Northern Catalpa and can be distinguished by the flowering panicles, which bear a larger number of smaller flowers, and slightly slenderer seed pods. Like its northern cousin, it produces large, heart-shaped leaves, and long, thin pods that contain flat light brown seeds. The flowers are 2.5 to 4 cm across, trumpet-shaped, white with yellow spots inside and grow in panicles of 20-40 which typically appear in June. It is widely grown as an ornamental and prefers moist soil and full sun. (Source: Wikipedia)
