Description
The Turkish Hazel is a tree native to southeast Europe and southwest Asia, from the Balkans through northern Turkey to northern Iran. It is the largest of the hazel species and can grow as tall as 25 m, and develops a stout trunk that can be as wide as 1.5 m in diameter. The bark is pale grey and has a thick, corky texture. Its leaves are rounded, 6-15 cm long and 5-13 cm across, and softly hairy on both sides. It produces flowers very early in the spring before the leaves appear. The fruit is a nut 1-2 cm long that is surrounded by a thick, softly spiny and bristly husk. The nuts are edible but because of their small small size are of little commercial value.
