Description
The White Mulberry is a short-lived, fast-growing, small to medium-sized tree that grows from 10-20 m tall. It is native to China but is widely cultivated and naturalized elsewhere. It does hybridize easily with our native red mulberry, causing concern for the long-term genetic viability of the red mulberry, and is listed as an invasive species in many parts of North America. White mulberry leaves are the preferred feedstock for silkworms, and are also cut for for food for livestock (cattle, goats, etc.) in areas of China where dry seasons restrict the availability of ground vegetation. The fruit are also eaten, often dried or made into wine. In traditional Chinese medicine, the fruit is used to treat prematurely grey hair, to ‘tonify’ the blood, and to treat constipation and diabetes. The bark is used to treat cough, wheezing, edema, fever, headache, and dry eyes. (Source: Wikipedia)
