THE 1st GREAT TREE HUNT:
THE 2nd GREAT TREE HUNT: ( reflected on this website)
As part of our communities’ celebrations for the Forest Capital of Canada designation of 2008, the Norfolk Field Naturalists, Norfolk Woodlot Owners Association and Norfolk County, challenged the community to find those rare gems in our Carolinian Forest which hold a special significance or stature. Funding for this project was provided through a grant by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This endeavour has initiated and inspired self-directed learning on tree identification and measuring techniques, as well as raise awareness of our unique local forest cover. This project was implemented on the ground by the Norfolk Environmental Stewardship Team, and relied significantly on uptake and response from the community.
A total of 350 nominations were received with a winning total of 101. Of those, 59 qualified for the Ontario Honour Roll, with several more potentially qualifying as Heritage Trees.
The winning trees were determined by using the same formula that is used by the Ontario Forestry Association, 1/10 height (m) x diameter (cm). This formula allows for a numeric ranking of each tree, and for each tree species the winner was determined by the greatest number of points.
In sum, the Great Tree Hunt is a commitment to our natural community treasures found amongst our Carolinian Forests and green spaces. Many Norfolk County trees deserve recognition for their great beauty, their ecological and economic importance, and their place in history. We hope you enjoy viewing Norfolk County’s Great Trees, both here on the website, and in person on a driving or walking tour.
